Career path:
Christian Redl had been in and under water more than anywhere else since childhood. Only ten years of age he was diving for the first time with breathing apparatus in his parent´s swimming pool. Today he is a PADI instructor.
1996 Christian started free diving. It all started with him watching the movie "The big blue" which brought forward many memories of his childhood. The same year he attended the first world championship in free diving, held in Nice, FRA and met Umberto Pelizzari. It was him, who motivated Christian to form his own team for the 2nd world championship.
Redl founded AIDA-Austria (AIDA - Worldwide Federation of Breath-Hold Diving) and in 1998 Austria was for the first time represented by a team in the world championship.
Today Christian Redl is one of the best free divers under ice, proven by his two distance world records under ice: 90 meters with fins and 150 meters aided by a scooter.
The close connection to nature, the absolute silence and the quest to live in sync with himself are the reason for Redl´s passion for free diving. But also the drive to dive deeper and longer and to challenge his own limits consistantly motivate the extrem athlete to go the extra length.
For the same reasons Redl set another three extraordinary world records in Mexico´s jungles. He was the first one to dive through a 101m long cave and furthermore dived to the bottom of a 60m deep cave, only with fins. The most recent project led him to a depth of 71m aided by weights. These projects are incredible mental challenges.
But there is also the fun factor of the sport. In 2005 - together with friend and training mate Jaromir Foukal - Redl developed ice hockey UNDER the ice, an idea which was quickly adopted by others and after two friendlies between countries the first "Under Ice Hockey World Championship was organised.
