news - The 124th Travemuender Woche begins– “Raising the Flag” and the National Sailing League

July 20 2013

The wait is over: the 124th Travemuender Woche was opened to enormous cheers by the Mayor of Lübeck, Bernd Saxe, with the traditional command “raise the flag” at 6pm on Friday evening. “I hope for fantastic weather with lots of sun and great wind – of which I am confident about this year”, said Saxe. The NDR presenter of the opening ceremony Maike Jäger was also pleased to be able to commence the ceremony without wearing a rain jacket on board the cog “Lisa von Lübeck”.

“Thanks to the latest technology, Sailing can be appreciated onshore and the top-class sport action will take place at a close distance”, said Dierk Faust, the first Chairman of Lübeck Yacht Club, the main organizer of Travemuender Woche. Faust welcomed partners, sponsors, and volunteers of the regatta week, including the main sponsors Düsseldorf, Holsten, Volkswagen, and SAP. 1300 sailors from roughly 20 countries will take part in approximately 25 boat classes. Participants and spectators look forward to six world championships and a German Open – especially in the catamaran classes.

The Finance Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Monika Heinold, wanted to travel across the lake on her own keel to arrive at the opening ceremony. “However, the forces of nature are the most important thing when sailing and they made us end our holiday in Kiel and travel by car”, said the minister. Torsten Albig, Minister-President and patron of the 124th Travemuender Woche, offered a big thank you and wished for lots of sun and wind over the following week.

Before the Mayor of Lübeck gave his command, the two young sailors Paul and Louisa Maaß, representatives of all the sailors in the Travemuender Woche, provided the sporting oath. The two sailors from Lübeck sail in the 420s and will launch on the course during the TW.

A new feature today was that there was some sailing action even before the official opening. The 18 best clubs in Germany battle it out for important points in the National Sailing League. The Lübeck Yacht Club (LYC) has undertaken a lot for their home match and prepared their Olympian, Simon Grotelüschen. After two second, one first, and one fifth place, the team enters the next day of competition in fifth place overall.

The Norddeutsche Regatta Verein (NRV) from Hamburg, co-organizers of the Travemuender Woche, made an impressive performance. With Johannes Polgar as helmsman, the team won three of the four races, placing them at the top of the current ratings. The teams will compete in the exciting short races directly in front of the north pier until Sunday. From Saturday and Sunday, the National Sailing League will also be broadcasted live for the first time from the SAP Media Racecourse and can be followed onshore in the new SAP Sail Cube or streamed online.
