news - First day on the baltic sea in the Nord Stream Race

Sep 18 2013

In February 2013, St. Petersburg Yacht Club (SPBYC), in Russia and German Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) announced their cooperation in holding the 2nd edition of the Nord Stream Race, established in 2012.

All registered boats participating in the Nord Stream Race have left the Flensburg Firth.  According to the different classes, the fleet is divided into three separate parts.

First expected boat in St. Petersburg is the yacht Elliott SS 52 "Outsiders" skippered by Tilmar Hansen. The Gazprom Swan60 yachts have already covered 200 of 800 nautical miles. Currently they are passing the Baltic island Bornholm, about 80 km northeast of Rügen. The favorites of the fast Swan yachts are the team of world champion and race initiator Vladimir Lubomirov with Team Russia and Team Great Britain on Tsaar Peter. Team Great Britain leads the field at the time, but the distance between the first and the last boat in the Swan class is less than 3 nautical miles. Thus, every team has still the chance to reach the port of St. Petersburg as first boat. A moderate breeze from the southwest guarantees a quick downwind trip under gennaker towards St. Petersburg. Indeed, the Baltic Sea is known for their challenging weather conditions at this season.

Marinepool is the official clothing partner of the Nord Stream race and Marinepool performance ocean sailing clothing will keep the crews on the fleet of Swan60s dry, warm, comfortable and able to focus on their competition with opponents and the fight with the elements even when the going gets tough.
