New sailing formats tailored for the spectators!

Sailors at the Travemünde Week this year come even closer to the spectators. The highly regarded event, this year in it´s 121st edition, traditionally offers visitors great atmosphere with a superb race village and first class view of the race courses. But changes this year take racing into the bay of Lübeck and transform the "Trave" into a unique sailing arena, where spectators do not only get a view of the sailors, they can virtually touch them! Spectacular classes will fight for the podium right off the esplanade in very limited space which guarantees nail-biting action for athletes, visitors and organizers! "Racing on the narrow Trave will be a real challenge and will be tough for everybody, including the guys who think they have seen it all….", says TW Race Officer Walter Mielke. He will send first of all the speedy catamarans around the marks.

Races will start every day at 5pm off the ship "Passat".

The race course was already agreed. After the start off the Lübecker Yacht Club´s quarters, sailors have to sail up the Trave towards the car ferry terminal and back to the north pier, from there back to the LYC. Winners will receive prices the same evening, sponsored by the Casino Travemünde, owned by the Spielbanken Schleswig Holstein. Roland Gäbler, former Tornado World Champion and President of the Tornado Class Association and Marinepool Racing Team member likes the format: "We want to make sailing more attractive and accessible and this is the perfect road to achieve just that!" He does not believe the difficult wind conditions will be a handicap for the races. Tornados are capable of handling wind from next to zero until 35 knots.

Visitors to Travemünde week can look forward to spectacular sailing and to new innovative formats, designed for them.

Races will be held right in front of the Marinepool Event Store where the new Travemünde Week Collection will be on offer, we are looking forward to your visit!
