news - RC44 Austria Cup: The focus is on Gmunden!

Apr 14 2010

RC44 Austria Cup (April 29 to May 4) and Allianz Traunsee Week (May 13-16)

The first duel of the America´s Cup winners after their overwhelming victory over Alinghi will not happen overseas and it will not happen at sea. It is the small town of Gmunden on the picturesque Austrian lake Traunsee which will see the first duel of Russel Coutts and James Spithil after the epic Valencia multihull battle.

The third edition of the RC44 Cup, traditionally bringing together high profile sailors, is one sensational attraction richer. Coutts and Spithill, protagonists of BMW Oracle´s historic victory and masterminds of the campaign will sail two RC44s against each other. Coutts will helm the racer of his boss, Larry Ellison, team owner of America´s Cup holder BMW Oracle and - according to Forbes - sixth richest man on the planet, the yacht Spithill will be stearing is still top secret.

On top of these two superstars the RC44 Austria Cup will be a gathering of the who-is-who of the international sailing circuit. Crews will be formed almost exclusively from America´s Cup professionals and Olympic and world champions.

Austria will be represented by the local heroes on AEZ RC44 Sailing Team with helmsman Christian Binder and team owner René Mangold who are keen to continue where they have left off in Dubai, the season starter, where they were able to win their first matches on the circuit.

The RC44 Austria cup has also become an important pillar of the local tourism, with an estimated additional 10.000 over night stays in hotels of the region.
