Austrian Match Racing Tour starts into second season with kick off event on Traunsee

Austria´s successful Match Racing Series, sponsored by Celox and MARINEPOOL will start into the second season this weekend. Thrilling matches on the water, loads of action and Austria´s best match racers are just some of the ingredients of the event on lake Traunsee which will convert the bay of Gmunden into a sailing arena. Close sailing right at the promenade will make great viewing for the spectators who will get the action on the water expertly explained by Austrian Olympic judge Helmut Czasny.

Match race is a sailing format where only two boats sail against each other on a short course, usually no longer than 15 minutes. They try, within the rules, to have the better start and to outfox their opponent - only victory counts. Judges on the water make sure it is a fair match an impose a penalty for every foul which has to be executed before the race is over. Often a decisive factor.

The event will see a high quality list of competitors. With Dejan Presen, a skipper ranked within the top 30 of the world ranking list will take part. He is among the favorites for overall victory, however, the Austrian top shots are also vying for the highest step of the podium. One of them is Roland Regnemer, second on the tour 2013 and one who wants to top the scores this season. The sailor from Lower Austria sailing for the UYC Neusiedl will have to fight against the local hero. Emanuel Köchert has his home in the host club UYC Traunsee and wants to become once again Austria´s best match racer. He is also keen to finish the 2014 season ahead.

"Match racing is a great format. Sailing can be followed from the shore and it is easy to understand", explains Anastasia Weinberger, who is managing the sport affairs of host club UYC Traunsee. "We look forward to a lot of close races right in front of the cities´water front."

The event will start on Friday, Ma 23rd with the first starting gun at 2pm, Friday and Saturday will see Round Robins (each team sails against the other competitors at least once) and the finals will be sailed on Sunday from 11am with the Prize Giving at 4pm.

Visitors to Gmunden can watch the racing along the Esplanade and City Square, live commentary will be available troughout the event.
