Guo Chuan Completes Circumnavigation
1st Chinese to sail solo non-stop around the world, record in a Class40
April 4, Qingdao, China
Today Chinese offshore professional Guo Chuan made history as the first Chinese sailor to single handedly sail around the world non stop.
Guo had set off from Qingdao, the Chinese city which gave the name to his Akilaria Class40 yacht and he returned to the same port today after 138 days at sea.
The epic journey is the first in the small Class 40 by a solo sailor and the past days Guo had to make heroic efforts to finish his journey, always in danger of dense marine traffic off the Chinese coast and the presence of fishing nets and vessels, that could have ended his world record journey on the final miles to his home port.
Marinepool supported Chuan Guo’s solo non-stop around the world challenge as “Official Clothing Supplier”.
Visitors to Shanghai International Boat Show will have the chance to meet Guo Chuan on the Marinepool stand on April 11, 2-3pm for an autograph hour and to hear more about his great adventure.
Congratulations Guo Chuan!

About Guo Chuan
Scientist, engineer, offshore sailing professional
Born in Jan 1965, Guo Chuan’s childhood dream was becoming a scientist. After completing a master's degree in aircraft control at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and an MBA at Peking University, he worked on commercial satellite launch projects at China Great Wall Industry Corporation.
However, Guo Chuan found a new direction at the age of 33 when he boarded a 40-foot keelboat with a friend in Hong Kong. When he was appointed the skipper of yacht "Qingdao" in 2004, set to sail to Shimonoseki in Japan in memorial of the 25 years of friendship between the two cities, the knot between Guo Chuan and sailing was officially tied. The trip as a friendship ambassador motivated Guo Chuan to pursue a profes-sional sailing career. His devotion to the sport even made him determined enough to set new records. ??Moreover, he has made history in creating many other "firsts" for China:
- the first and only professional offshore ?   sailor in China
- the first Chinese who participated in the?  Clipper Round the World in 2006
- the first Olympic torchbearer to pass the ?  torch by sailboat during the Qingdao leg
- the first Chinese who completed the ?   VOLVO Ocean Race in 2008-2009 as?  Media Crew Member on Green Dragon
- the first Chinese who participated in the ?  Mini Transat sailing event and successfully?  sailed across the Atlantic Ocean single-?  handed in a mini yacht (6.5metre) in 2011
