Marinepool proudly announces a partnership with Guo Chuan
Marinepool will become the official supplier for Chuan Guo’s solo non-stop around the world challenge. Guo Chuan, piloting the Class40 yacht “Qingdao”, is attempting to set a world record in Class40 solo non-stop circumnavigation, starting in early November this year.
In world sailing history, many top sailors have come to fame through their single-handed world sailing tours. However, no sailor has ever attempted to set a solo non-stop circumnavigation record in the small sized, but seaworthy Akilaria Class 40. Therefore, if Guo Chuan’s run is successful, a new world record for solo non-stop around the world challenge of a Class40 yacht will be created, and for the first time, by a Chinese.
“Marinepool is proud to welcome Guo Chuan on board - as our partner and as Chinese ambassador for the Marinepool brand.
He is one of the best known sailors in his country and joins some of the ?world´s finest sailors, among them world champions, world record holders and America´s Cup sailors in the Marinepool family.”
“China has impressively demonstrated this summer that it is the world´s number one sporting nation and we have no doubt that Guo will succeed in his challenge to circumnavigate the globe solo in a Class 40 yacht. We wish him fair winds, a good portion of luck and a safe return to Qingdao, which will also be a home-coming for Marinepool, as we already had a presence in the city before it hosted the Games in 2008.“
“China has a massive potential as a market for the marine industry and the sport of sailing and we are confident that Guo can successfully raise the awareness of the Chinese sailing and sports community for the Marinepool brand“, said Christoph Stadler, Marinepool Marketing Director.
Guo Chuan continues: “I am very happy to get the support from Marinepool, one of the top brands in the marine industry. Being able to cooperate with such an international brand with excellent fame, I feel very excited. And I wish more Chinese will know and wear Marinepool”.
“Personally, I like to wear Marinepool at sea. Their offshore clothing makes me feel comfortable, mobile and well protected. My wife prefers the stylish design of Marinepool, its casual wear series looks elegant and posh.”
Guo Chuan spent most of his time training in France over the past two years until his boat “Qingdao” was delivered by COSCO Group from the UK to Hongkong on the 7th of this month. At present, “Qingdao” has been reassembled and is thoroughly tested at the Royal Hongkong Yacht Club. Next week Guo Chuan will sail the boat back to his home Qingdao for final preparations for his solo non-stop around the world challenge.
Guo Chuan's Odyssey will start on November 4, 2012, from Qingdao at the East Sea of China, he will then head east towards Cape Horn. After sailing past Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, he will sail through the Malacca Straits and finally return to Qingdao. The 21,600-nautical-mile journey is scheduled to be completed within 125 days.
Guo Chuan - Scientist, engineer, offshore professional
Born in Jan 1965, Guo Chuan’s childhood dream was becoming a scientist. After completing a master's degree in aircraft control at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and an MBA at Peking University, he worked on commercial satellite launch projects at China Great Wall Industry Corporation.
However, Guo Chuan found a new direction at the age of 33 when he boarded a 40-foot keelboat with a friend in Hong Kong. When he was appointed the skipper of yacht "Qingdao" in 2004, set to sail to Shimonoseki in Japan in memorial of the 25 years of friendship between the two cities, the knot between Guo Chuan and sailing was officially tied. The trip as a friendship ambassador motivated Guo Chuan to pursue a profes-sional sailing career. His devotion to the sport even made him determined enough to set new records.
Moreover, he has made history in creating many "firsts" for China:
- the first and only professional offshore ?   sailor in China
- the first Chinese who participated in the?  Clipper Round the World in 2006
