A trawler has come into collision with Groupe Bel

Kito de Pavant, skipper onboard Groupe Bel, has crossed the start line of the Vendée Globe last Saturday. He contacted his shore team this morning at 10.05 am to inform that a trawler has come into collision with his boat. The damages are significant: the bowsprit has ripped off, the left outrigger has broken and the boat deck has raised up 2 meters. Kito is safe. He has secured his mast and is now sailing towards Cascais in Portugal at a speed of 9 knots.

According to the race direction, his position was at 39°56 North et 9°56 West, about 70 miles north from Cascais. He was 10 miles behind SynerCiel (Jean Le Cam) and 25 miles east of Gamesa (Mike Golding).

Apparently the trawler hadn´t activated his AIS Sytem, an automatic tracking system used to locate other boats at sea. Kito will give more news later in the day.
