Marinepool Racing Team benchmark in Kiel - 49ers wins ISAF World Cup 2011

Kiel, GER, June 22

The Austrian 49er team Nico Delle Karth and Niko Resch, know on the circuit as the "Nickos" won their second consecutive ISAF World Cup. But also the other athletes on the Marinepool Racing Team showed great results, Kiel was definitely worth their while.

With a second place in the Medal Race 49er cracks Delle Karth/Resch finished Kiel Week in 3rd. Enough to secure the second ISAF World Cup title for the team who has been leading the ISAF World Ranking List for 357 days and sails together since 1999.

The foundation for the successful defence of their 2010 title was layed in Melbourne (AUS) where they won and with a 3rd rank in Palma (ESP). Their 2011 title is an important step towards their ultimate goal, a medal in London 2012. The next season highlights are following suit with the European Championship (July 2-14, Helsinki) and the Preolympics (Aug 1-15, Weymouth).

With 3 class wins the Marinepool Racing Team was the benchmark in Kiel even though many of the MP top athletes did not sail in the north of Germany because of their tight calendar.

Simon Grotelüschen (GER) confirmed his great form with his first ever World Cup win in Laser and was obviously hugely satisfied. He shows great form in 2011 and managed to make a great step forward. At his current form he suddenly sails right in the world elite.

Match race European champion Ekaterina Skudina (RUS) showed that one can never write her off. After mixed results this season, Ekaterina showed that she is one of the very best and beat the world´s elite match racers in style, taking home the trophy in Elliott 6m.

The third class win went to 49ers Schadewaldt/Baumann (GER). After a shocking accident in 2010 where one of the crew almost drowned the duo was having a difficult time on the race course. In Kiel they could call off their full potential and with a victory in the Mecca of sailing their self confidence made a leap forward. With this top spot they are very close to achieve their goal of winning the German selection for the London 2012 games.
