The Louis Vuitton Cup was first held in 1983. Until 2007, this match race was the qualification for the America’s Cup, the oldest and most famous sailing event in the world. Challengers sailed the Louis Vuitton Cup and only the winning team was proceeding to the America´s Cup against the defender.
2007 Louis Vuitton withdrew her sponsorship from the America´s Cup circuit. But then there was the endless court dispute between Alinghi and BMW Oracle about the how and where of the 33rd America´s Cup.
Together with syndicates shut out, Louis Vuitton created the Louis Vuitton Trophy with a very simple formula. The teams sailed on equal America´s Cup 5 generation yachts, provided by LVT, against each other. The event was an instant success.
The last of these events - in future the America´s Cup will be sailed in multihulls - the Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai, will be held from Nov. 12 to 28 at the Dubai International Marine Club.
