July 20-July 29 2012
Full of excitement, organisers and sailors are gearing up to the official opening ceremony of the 123rd Travemünder Woche (20th to 29th July). Today (Friday, 20th July) at 6 pm the Minister President and patron Torsten Albig gave the opening signal for the Travemünder, kicking off the best time of the year for the visitors. While the party animals were able to get stuck in straight away, the sailors had to wait until the following morning. At 10am on Saturday morning the first starting shot will sound out on the lake course. Then 1567 participants from 27 nations will set off to race in 683 boats before the week is out on 29th July.
According to tradition, the sea-going yachts will kick off the regatta marathon, which in the coming 9 days will see 20 classes fight it out on seven triangular courses, the lake course and in the Trave Sailing Arena. At 10am director of the lake course Hans-Herbert Hoffmann will send 49 crews out onto the medium length course, which leads the yachts in a zigzag course to Grömitz. The favourite for this course is the Hamburg "RubiX" with skipper Max Gurgel, who has already won both German titles on the inshore and offshore courses this year.
The Olympic Finns, the 505 class and the Triassic yachts are up next on Saturday. Special attention will be given to the Match Racer, which prior to the Travemünde won the German championship and will be kicking off the duals on the first day of the regatta - which will be decided at the finals on Tuesday 24th July. Two further German championship titles will be awarded at the Travemünder Woche. The Kielzugvögel will be sailing for the German crown from Sunday 22nd July, until Wednesday 25th July, and the Variantas will be on the course from Sunday until Tuesday. Two unofficial German titles will also be awarded in the J22 German Open (26th to 28th July) and the Platu25 (26th to 29th July). Excitement is also building about the other classes. The F18 and Tornado catamarans will be fighting it out for ranking points, as well as the skiff classes 18 footers, International 14, Contender and Musto Skiffs, along with the O-Jollen, Korsare, J80, the folk boats and the Olympic Laser, which over the course of the week will appear on Lübecks prettiest daughter, the Travemünde.
