March 30, Palma de Mallorca, Spain
The international sailing circuit kicks off the European season with the Princesa Sofia Trophy from April 3 in Palma.
After Sail Melbourne and the Miami OCR the sailing circuit has gathered on the island of Mallorca to sail the first race of the ISAF World Cup in the European calendar.
The international elite will race for world cup points and for a royal hand shake with Queen Sophia and King Juan Carlos, who is a passionate sailor himself. An Olympian in 1972, he still shows his passion for sailing in the highly competitive Audi TP52 Med Cup where he helms the successful yacht Bribon.
1.000 sailors from 45 nations will race under the King´s critical eyes and will have to undergo three days of qualification. After this first selection the first third of the fleet will continue in the Gold Fleet, the Medal Race will be sailed only by the best 10 boats after the second qualifying round.
The medal races are scheduled for April 9. Watch out at www.marinepool.com for the results of the world class athletes on the Marinepool Racing Team competing in the Princesa Sofia Trophy. The Marinepool Racing Team is ready and hungry to build on the great success in 2010.
Comprising world class sailors from a broad number of countries the Marinepool Racing Team at the Princess Sophia Trophy will for the first time be identified as such by identical clothing over all classes and countries.
The first goal for the teams for the 2011 season is to show their class in the qualifyers for the London 2012 Summer Games where they want to achieve the ultimate goal of every athlete, a medal.
That these hopes and the goals are not set too high is shown by the great success of the Marinepool Racing Team in 2010 where they could win numerous titles.
Surely the most outstanding performance was shown by Austrian 49er cracks Nico Delle Karth/Niko Resch who could win the overall ISAF World Cup 2010 in their class and continued their outstanding performance with a Gold Medal in the first event of this year´s World Cup in Melbourne.
Russias Ekaterina Skudina and her team were the team to beat at the Elliott 6m European Championship in 2010 and could add a gold medal in the event to their trophy collection.
In 470 the French duo of Charbonnier/Meyer (this year Nicolas sails with a new crew, Mion) won a silver medal in the 470 World Championship while Austrian youngsters Bargehr/Mähr did the same in the 470 Youth World Championship and will fight their way up the ranks on the ISAF Worldcup Circuit this season.
French Sarah Steyaert was 4th in the Laser Radial World Championship in 2010, Austrian Andi Geritzer achieved the same result in the Laser European´s.
In the Star Class the Marinepool Racing Team is represented by French team Florent/Rambeau, winners of the 2011 Bacardi Cup and Germans Babendererde/Jacobs, Schlonski/Bohn and Stanyek/Koy.
